  1. Monday's mp3: Malagasy Magic

    Listen
Paul-Bert Rahasimanana may not be a household name, even among global music fans. But he looms large in my own relationship with "world music." More commonly known as Rossy, the Malagasy artist recorded a delicious album ripe with the unusual -- even exotic -- sounds of Madagascar that was released by Real World Records in 1991.

Island of Ghosts is actually a soundtrack, I'm told, to a film of the same name. (I haven't seen it - if anyone can get me the film, you earn big SoundRoots karma points). But while it has something of a soundtrack's atmosphere, the music holds up solidly as a stand-alone musical album as well, though some of the tracks are much shorter than ordinary songs. Even the brief audio glimpses of mysterious instruments like the valiha, aponga, and kabosy are mesmerizing. Sure, the upbeat tunes also contain a fair amount of synth, but hey -- this was barely out of the 1980s, and Rossy was listening to pop as well as to his roots.

Rossy started out as a country accordion player, forming his first band in 1981. He quickly learned new instruments (valiha, guitar, flute) and musical styles (salegy, pop, rock, reggae) when he moved to the island nation's capitol, Antananarivo, and his group became one of the most popular in Madagascar. Despite this, only two or three recordings are available, sadly. And I have no idea if Rossy is still musically active (anyone?).

Many seem to consider the 1992 album One Eye on the Future, One Eye On the Past Rossy's key recording, but my early exposure to the entrancing melodies and instruments on Ghosts has kept the earlier album uppermost in my musical mind. This song, the liner notes say, "is an appeal to the Malagasy people to think of their island as an inheritance which must be preserved for later generations."

  5. New music from Madagascar from "Goodbye East, Goodby West" (Western Vinyl)
  6. 14 May 2007 at 7:43am

It's funny what excites me as a blogger. A leak of some new Arcade Fire track would hardly register a blip on my radar, a new Morrissey track only a passing interest but something new from the Baltimore instrumental group Madagascar and I'm all a twitter. I went to their label's page, Western Vinyl, half assuming they'd be out of business (great label btw but can't imagine the discs are blowing out the doors) and was excited to read of of a new release from this group called Goodbye East, Goodbye West.

Madagascar is one of those frustrating groups that want you to know little if anything about them. There is no biographical info on any of their sites and nothing at Western Vinyl. I've got to assume some of the band have an Eastern European, possibly Jewish background, since the music is made up of Balkan marching band numbers, Jewish folk tunes, bowed saw and accordion laced dirges.

The title track continues the instrumental approach they used on their debut, Forced March, but adds some wordless chanting this time round. If you claim to like Beirut, and fall all over Devotchka, than you'd better like this as well, damn it! Buy it here now.

My current favorite band in the world, Garaj Mahal, will be playing tomorrow at Quixotes True Blue in Denver. Their brand of Pakastani-jam-funk-jazz will get you movin' and shakin'. These guys are one of the greatest collections of seasoned musicians you'll find anywhere. If you don't have plans yet I suggest making some! IMHO they are the must see band out there right now.

President Bush on Wednesday said, "In addition to some great singing, last year's American Idol featured a fundraising campaign called, "Idol Gives Back." The campaign brought in more than $75 million for charities working in the United States and Africa. Seventeen million dollars went to organizations that protect American families -- African families from malaria. And one of these charities, Malaria No More, has used the donations to provide bed nets for more than 2 million mothers and children in Uganda and Angola and Madagascar and Mali and Zambia. ...Laura and I hope, and Jordin hopes, that America's generosity will still pour forth, and we ask our fellow citizens to contribute to this worthy cause."

  27. Waxidermy On, Waxidermy Off
  28. 23 Mar 2007 at 4:54pm

Waxidermy Album covers (from top left): Units, Chandra, Konrad, and Guem et Zaka

Although my crate-digging days are numbered (what with the kids and the full-time job and SoulSeek and all), I'll never lose interest in discovering the outer limits of vintage LPs.

Waxidermy is now my primary source for these wildly offbeat musical gems. From Cuban electronica to inter species collaborations to Christian psych folk to sinist er Ethiopian grooves, Waxidermy delivers the proverbial goods. Plus the album covers make for a hilarious, "wow-factor-9" visual treat.

So go ahead and drop a virtual needle on each of these incredible tracks. They're Waxidermy-hosted, Tomorrowland-approved nuggets of mp3 gold:

    Units: "High Pressure Days"
San Fran synth-rock from 1980. Devo-influenced male/female vocals with a catchy ostinato and plenty of snappy drumwork. So much better than the rest of the crappy synthpop from the 80s.

    Chandra: "Subways"
Perhaps the finest child-fronted post-punk album of all time? Chandra Oppenheimer rocks the house with a level of focus and sincerity well beyond her mere 12 Earth years. Lay it on us, Chan.

San Ul Lim: "Lay Silk on my Heart"
Waaaaay tripped out 70s groove rock direct from South Korea. (Love that rhythm section! And the lead guitar is faxed in from Jupiter!) The South will rise again...

    Eddie Baxter: "Super Organ"
Impossibly cheesy church organ performance redeemed by massive amounts of weird synth. A synth-sterpiece!

    Lifetones: "Good Side"
Incredible track from the 1983 solo album by This Heat's Charles Bullen. Dub reggae riddims, droning multi-track vocals, shimmering guitar. A true step forward in the post-punk evolutionary process.

    Marj Snyder: "God"
A great bit of Christian psych folk on the super mellow tip. Her voice is great, her chords are great, the lyrics are really heartfelt and not overbearing. Definitely for fans of Linda Perhacs, Bridget St John and Vashti Bunyan.

Khalsa String Band: "Sing of Bliss"
Beautiful hippie folk: piano, picked acoustic guitar and ethereal female vocals. Nice!

    Madagascar Now: "Madagascar Now"
Lush, dreamy zither lines (sound like a harp) float over roomy drums and hand percussion. World music at its most spacious.

    Konrad: "My Girl"
Yes, the guy from the album cover in the image above. Deliciously cheesy whitey funk from the Evil One himself. Possibly a stunt double for Gary Wilson?

  31. Episode 76, February 1, 2007 - Do You Beleive in Comoros?
  32. 1 Feb 2007 at 8:22pm

So, it turns out there is a country called Comoros. More of our listeners have probably heard of Qo’noS than Comoros. Comoros has way fewer Klingons...

So what did we learn about this island group nestled between Mozambique and Madagascar? Well Isabelle talked to a guy on Skype from Comoros and he mentioned that the Ylang Ylang is the big crop and that as the economy is not doing that well the production of this plant which makes up like 28 percent of their GDP is going down. Ylang Ylang for those interested is used in bullsh... err, aromatherapy. He however seemed like a nice guy and he is the inspiration for the cool picture Isabelle did for this episode.

Historically it seems the islands were settled by Polynesian people which is pretty cool. Those Polynesians sure got around. Polynesia for the win...

France took the islands over, as European countries tended to do back in the 1800s and granted the islands their independence in the 1970s. Well yeah but France now and then seems to back coups on the islands with the help of legendary mercenary Bob Denard.

Comoros is a very poor country and their prospects are anything if stable. That said Western influences abound including their music, their TV and use of the net. That said they put their own spin on it, including mixing Swahili and Arabic.

Comoros are unranked by the IIHF.

Well after two poor countries we move on to Hong Kong in the next installment! Woo hoo, Dim Sum!

  35. Explainer: Giant Dinosaurs in Argentina
  36. 18 Oct 2007 at 11:43am
Giant Dinosaurs in Argentina Why are the biggest fossils found in Patagonia? By Morgan Smith Paleontologists announced on Monday that they had discovered the remains of a 105-foot-long dinosaur on the banks of a lake in the Argentine portion of Patagonia. The Futalognkosaurus dukei ranks among the largest known dinosaurs, along with two other species whose remains were discovered in Patagonia, the Argentinosaurus and Puertasaurus reuili. Why are all the biggest dinosaurs found in Patagonia? They died at the right time in the right place. Patagonia happens to be an excellent place to find fossils from the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs reached their largest sizes. (The extinction of the dinosaurs occurred at the end of the Cretaceous, about 65 million years ago.) Because of natural uplift and erosion, sediment that dates from this time is exposed at the surface in the region's desert badlands. This makes fossilized bones easier to spot and excavate. (Fossils are also easy to find in the badlands of the Dakotas, Wyoming, and Montana, as well as in Mongolia's Gobi Desert.) The three giant dinosaurs found in Patagonia are all titanosaurs, a kind of long-necked sauropod that happened to get very big in South America. Since South America was its own continent for most of the Cretaceous Period, much of its plant and animal life evolved distinctly from that of the other land masses. Its isolation could have been responsible for spurring sauropods to grow larger than those found on other continents, but there's no scientific consensus as to exactly how this happened. (In contrast, large mammal populations tend to shrink in size when they evolve in isolation.) Sauropod remains aren't found just in South America. So far, specimens have been discovered on every continent except Antarctica, where the fossil rock sediment isn't readily accessible. Excavators have even found evidence of the biggest sauropods—i.e., the titanosaurs—in North America, Australia, and Madagascar. It's possible that as paleontologists excavate more sites rich in Cretaceous fossils, like those in India, China, and sub-Saharan Africa, larger dinosaur remains will be discovered. But as of yet, none of those areas has yielded any animal as big as those discovered in Patagonia.

  39. CD Picks of the Week (Soundcheck: Monday, 14 July 2008)
  40. 14 Jul 2008 at 9:41pm
    Listen
Vladimir Horowitz, "Horowitz in Hamburg: The Last Concert" (Deutsche Grammophon)

In June 1987, the great Russian pianist Vladimir Horowitz arrived in Hamburg, Germany at the end of a long European tour. He was 83 and it turned out to be his last public engagement. Fortunately, there were microphones from North German Radio ready to record every brilliant run, quirky accent, and crashing chord. This new disc documents that event. Listen to his performance of Chopin’s Polonaise No. 6 in A-Flat and you'll get a taste of that Horowitz magic, mellowed only slightly by age. --Brian Wise

Silver Jews, “Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea” (Drag City)

Our next CD pick comes from Silver Jews, the longtime project of the musician and writer David Berman. The band's lineup has included some of indie rock’s biggest names -- Pavement's Stephen Malkmus co-founded the group nearly 20 years ago. Now, with his wife Cassie backing him up, Berman’s storytelling talent continues to shine, like on the character sketch "Aloyisius Bluegrass Drummer." –-Joel Meyer

Peter Gabriel, et al. "Big Blue Ball" (Real World)

For some 20 years, Peter Gabriel has lived and worked in a refurbished mill outside the English city of Bath. The mill houses his Real World studios, and at three points during the 1990s, Gabriel invited musicians from all over the globe to what can only be described as a world music camp. For a week, musicians would live and eat and play together, and some unexpected, and unexpectedly good collaborations ensued. Big Blue Ball is a collection of some of those performances, from a motley crew that touched on the traditions of Madagascar, Central Africa, the Near East, American Gospel, indie rock, and of course, Peter Gabriel’s own brand of global pop.--John Schaefer
